SSC Stenographer - Is it really an easy way to become Government Staff ?
Shorthand
is described as short + hand, which means writing in specified symbols
so that one can write in high speed with following the phonetically
principal. It means you only have to work on sound principle. For
example, “Like” is considered to be four alphabets in English Language
but in Shorthand, it will be considered only two alphabets with one
diphthong principle, so it will be read as la + ie + k.
In
the previous years, this art i.e. shorthand was considered as dying
art. Yes, people had left this field just because of dearth of
stenographers and no new recruitment were initiated by Government. From
the year 2010 itself, once again people started thinking of career in
Government via Stenographer Examination which was conducted by Staff
Selection Commission (SSC) every year. Once again many students who were
in the field with this art, started gaining the confidence of getting
into Government Jobs. Today also, people working in PSUs and other
industries are ready to take this opportunity as from the last many
years, recruitment under Stenographers, is again catching speed.
But, IS IT REALLY EASY TO BECOME A GOVERNMENT SERVANT AS STENOGRAPHER?
I would say, NO,
Stenographer
Examination is like a stone breaking job. One cannot get through the
examination if he didn’t know the shorthand. Learning shorthand is a
far tedious job than it looks like. Only learning is not enough, one
must be fully ready with a good vocabulary and awareness about the
Government style of language. I saw many students saying, Yes, we know
shorthand but how many of them are able to crack this examination. The
answer is very low. Every year SSC invites application from Indian
Nationals for Stenographer Examination. But the percentage of filling up
those posts is very low because of unavailability of candidates. Still
Staff Selection Commission is degrading the selection criteria for
filling up these posts but the superior quality of stenographers are not
available throughout the India.
Pattern of SSC Stenographer Examination: The
pattern of SSC Stenographer Examination is not very different from
other competitive exams. This exam comprise of two stages :
- First stage is written examination.
- Candidates selected in written examination, will be called for Shorthand skill test.
Let’s discuss first the pattern of Written Examination. Later we’ll discuss about skill test elaborately.
Institutes of Shorthand:
if we talk about institutes for learning shorthand, it will not be
wrong to say that Delhi is the only station where one can learn quality
shorthand and prepare for Stenographer Examination. Since 2010, many
institutes had been off due to unavailability of candidates. At present,
only few good institutes are available in Delhi who can give really
good guidance for shorthand. With the growing number of vacancies over
the past few years, some new institutes are also ready to take their
advantage in this field. Some new job grabbers have also started their
own coaching centre in the nearby of their homes and offices. So, if you
are keen to learn this art, I would suggest to opt for some good
quality institutes rather than newly setup centres. Because shorthand
solely depends on experience, the more experience you have, more demand
will be there for you. Again, Delhi is the only idle place where you can
learn shorthand. If you live in any other state, try to figure out some
good institutes. One thing I would like to share is .....Do not be
in Hurry! Don’t think - Ok I can do it in the last 2 months of skill
test. That is not true. Shorthand is a lengthy process, it needs time,
time and time, to be a perfect stenographer.
Note :
Recently, I have heard about the institutes in Delhi who are claiming
of teaching shorthand in 35-40 days. Yes, they will try to teach you
shorthand but without making you clear about the concepts. Shorthand
needs grooming from the base. One cannot learn shorthand without
clearing the doubts. These institutes will let you catch Rajdhani
Express via Shorthand. My dear friends, shorthand can only be learn with
peace of mind and without any tension. These institutes are nothing
just money makers. Think wisely, stop filling their bank accounts.
Please try to avoid them.
Overview of SSC Stenographer Examination 2013 :
In the year 2013, SSC once again invited applications from the eligible
candidates for filling up the post of Stenographers. Approximately
300000 students applied for this examination. Out of which 2,75,000
appeared for written examination. The written examination was conducted
on 29th December, 2013 which resulted into around 2500 candidates were
selected for Grade C and 24000 candidates were selected for Grade D.
Further, these students were called for Shorthand Skill Test from June,
2014 onwards. In the mid of July, 2014, Final results were out and you
know what out of 2500 candidates, only 1000 candidates approximately,
were appeared in the skill test for Grade "C" and out of 24000
candidates, around 8000 candidates were appeared for Grade "D" Exam.
Now, you can have an idea about the success rate for this examination.
