Indian Revenue Service is one of the good post which candidates prefer after IAS, IPS and IFS (Foreign Service). The IRS Officers in Income Tax Department are selected through Civil Services Examination which is to be conducted by UPSC.

    

On Selection to IRS Cadre, the selected candidates will be sent for foundation training  at LBSNAA, Mussuree (Dehradun) along with other Officers like IAS, IPS and so on, for the period of 4 months. On the competion of foundation training, you will be directed to attend Profession Training at National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT), Nagpur. You will get the training as Assistant Commissioner Of Income Tax (ACIT) which is the primary post in IRS Cadre. Once you complete the professional training, you will be asked to go to your respective state.

   

Duties of IRS Officer (Income Tax) : 

You will serve for about 8 years as Assistant Commissioner before getting a promotion to Deputy Commissioner of Income tax (DCIT).  You will examine cases in which the tax assessed is more than the prescribed figure. Assistant Commissioners deal with income and losses between Rs. 2 - 5 lakhs.

    

Promotion :

Once you serve as ACIT, next promotion is for Deputy Commissioner (DCIT) or Deputy Director of Income Tax (DDIT) in the Senior Time Scale. In the Junior Administrative Grade, you will be promoted as Joint Commissioner of Income-tax / Addl. Commissioner of Income-tax. As you can see in the table above at point 9, there is a controlling board named as "Central Board of Direct Taxes "(CBDT), which consist of a Chairman, Members and other supportive staff, situated at New Delhi. The Officers in the Apex Scale are selected for the post of Chairman / Members.

    

In the Indian Revenue Service, it is expected from the Officers that they serve the nation well and bring revenue to the Government keeping the departmental expenses to the minimum. An IRS Officer is responsible for policy making, investigation of cases and make their own decisions as per circumstances along with that he has to prevent practices of corruption and fraudulence.

Besides having the guidance from the superior officers, a probationer officer has to learn a lot of things on entering upon the office. However, there are different training modules available to him from time to to time.
