Inspector (Excise) :

If you are appointed as Inspector in Excise & Service tax, your main objective will be to scrutinize the records, you have verify whether the taxes which have been levied, are getting paid correctly or not. If not, you have to forward notices as per the direction of your superior officer. You have control over the various production units in the area concerned to your office. You also have to conduct some raids (survey) from time to time and notify the Officer In-charge. You will have a multifucntional job profile while working as Inspector in Excise Department.
Uniform : Excise Inspectors have to wear a khaki uniform. Not regularly, just occassionally. Probably on the time of National Festival such as Independence Day, Republic Day etc. They also have to perform guard of honor if asked to do so, at such time .

Inspector (Preventive Officer) :

Inspector or Preventive Officer in Customs and Excise Department is considered to be an adventurous and broadly classified job.
You might have heard that if you want to bring any item from a foreign country to India, you need to pay some amount as custom, that is called Custom Duty. In simple words, Preventive Officers prevent any smuggling items to be shipped inside the country, they are usually appointed on the various Sea Ports, Air ports and other places where smuggling could be anticipated.
You have also heard about gold smuggling, people used to smuggle the gold from other countries at cheaper rates and then, they sell it here on high rates to earn profit. In such circumstances, a Preventive Officer comes into action and nabbed them before they can get away with the Gold. A preventive officer has to check boats, cargo, ships coming from foreign countries and confiscate the goods if found illegal. After that, auctioning the confiscated goods is also the duty of a Preventive Officer.
Now, I think you have some idea what are the duties of a Preventive Officer.
Uniform : Inspector / Preventive officer has to wear a white uniform while on duty on regular basis.
Working Hours : Normal working hours. May extend if required depending upon the work load. May asked to work on Saturday and Sundays also. Job Posting will be too far from your home. So be prepare.Don’t opt this post profile, if you want to stay close to your home.

Inspector (Examiner) :

Inspector / Examiner is also the same job profile as of Preventive Officer. The main duty of an Examiner is to examine the goods and cargo which needs to be imported or exported to other countries and then, levy the charges (duty) on that shipment. You have to examine the goods, prepare lists, check market values of confiscated goods etc. Help the officers in Auctioning of Goods.
Uniform : No uniform for this post.
Working Hours : Normal working hours. May extend if required depending upon the work load. May asked to work on Saturday and Sundays also. Job Posting may be far from your home. So be prepare.
I hope, now you have some idea about all the three posts mentioned above. You can now easily classify the difference between Excise Inspector, Preventive Officer and Examiner Posts and can easily opt the best option according to your choice.

    1. Preventive officers have to undergo a 2 week weapon training where you will deal with various weapons. It is expected from a preventive officer to have expertise in weapon technology. Hence, it depends on the place of posting. If posting is in hard areas, you will get weapon else no weapon.
