Indian Information Service - Complete Job Profile, Duties, Promotion, Pay Details

The Indian Information Services (IIS)

As the name suggests, the Indian Information Service - Bhartiya Suchana Seva ( भारतीय सुचना सेवा ) is itself a very dignified service among other services available under Civil Services. You already know that there millions of candidates appear in Civil Services Exam and out of them, few are the winning horses. So, the competition is tough and only person having strong foundations and hard work can succeed. 

Once the selection is done by UPSC, candidates will be asked to attend the 3 months foundation training. After that, they will be given 9 months professional training at Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) at New Delhi. After successful completion of this approx. 1 year trianing, you will be asked to have some experience with real media agencies such as PIB, NSD, AIR. All these agencies comes under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Work and Duties of IIS Officer : 

An Information Officer has to deal with plenty of works on daily basis. He has to make arrangements for all broadcasting matters pertains to Government of India. He has to coordinate and manage the Press Information Bureau (PIB). He may be asked to work with Doordarshan and look after  the duties and responsibilities in that Department. You will have to keep an eye on the work done by the subordinates and direct them from time to time, for betterment in this field. You will have to take care of all types of communications which govt. wants to be printed such as Calendars, Diaries, Notes, Articles etc on priority basis through the Directorate of Audio Visual Publicity (DAVP).

Promotions of Indian Information Service Officers :


The promotion aspect is good in IIS. However, the Departmental Promotion Committee will decide the exact criteria of promotion to officers. Promotions totally depends on Performance Appraisal Report, Vigialnce Clearance and other important aspects. Also, if vacancy is there, it would be an easy task. But due to some stagnations in this field, sometime promotions are getting delayed.
